Strategic alignment: Cascading vision into action through A3 planning and goal deployment

08 Sept 2026

In healthcare, true transformation begins with a clear, aligned strategy that connects organisational vision to every level of the organisation. Yet many systems struggle to translate high-level goals into consistent, actionable priorities that drive daily execution.

In this session, hear directly from the Executive Directors of the Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospital Group and Peel Hospital within South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS). These two groups have successfully developed and deployed their own strategic plans, grounded in A3 concepts and the SMHS Improvement Method — developed in partnership with Virginia Mason Institute (VMI).

Learn how they applied rigorous strategic alignment practices to:

  • Define and prioritise True North goals using A3 thinking
  • Cascade goal setting, measurement, and accountability throughout their organisations
  • Align leadership behaviours, resources, and improvement efforts to deliver meaningful results for patients, staff, and the broader health system

Through their real-world stories, participants will gain practical insights into building strategic alignment as the foundation of VMI’s World Class Management system — turning ambition into sustained performance and creating a culture where every voice contributes to achieving shared priorities.18

This session sets the stage for the day’s focus on VMI’s three pillars of World Class Management: Strategic Alignment, Cross Functional Management, and Daily Management.
