New risk prediction model for managing COPD in primary care

Tool offers increased precision in estimating exacerbation risk

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It is frequently seen in primary care, where guidelines are at the cusp of moving towards risk stratified treatment recommendations. Theoretically, patients with a greater risk of deteriorating over the next year should be offered more aggressive therapy, whereas those patients who will likely remain stable over the next year might do equally well on lighter touch therapy. Implementing this approach requires sufficiently accurate risk prediction tools.
