Priorities for artificial intelligence education: clinicians’ perspectives

Clinicians are most likely to be motivated to learn about AI framed around its liability implications and determining appropriate confidence in AI algorithms, as these are perceived as important and confidence is low. Despite being key skills for clinical safety and low confidence ratings, critical appraisal of AI interventions and patient explanations of AI were rated least important. Residents and educators have equally low confidence in AI-related learning outcomes, highlighting a challenge in education delivery. This study enhances the NHSE Capability Framework by contextualising AI-related capabilities for clinicians as users and identifying priorities with which to develop scalable training.
