Kathryn Abel
Kathryn Abel FMEdSci is Professor of Psychological Medicine and Reproductive Psychiatry, Founder & Director of the Centre for Women’s Mental Health at the University of Manchester (UoM) since 2001 and of GM.Digital at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust since 2014, where she is also an honorary consultant psychiatrist. GM.Digital has a focus on improving access to, and engagement in mental health research and service development by young people with a large very diverse online youth advisory group (YouthConnection).
She has published over 200 research papers and is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, European Research Council Fellow, a National Institutes of Health Research Senior Investigator and was the National Lead for Mental Health for the UK NIHR from 2015-2024. She worked with NICE between 2008-2018 and since 2023, co-Chairs the UK Government and Office for Life Sciences Mental Health Goals Programme (formerly Mental Health Mission) with a focus on developing infrastructure for precision psychiatry and innovation https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/life-sciences-healthcare-goals/mental-health-goals in in order specifically to streamline and encourage innovative treatments to improve the lives of people with mental illness.
