Xiao Liu
Dr. Xiaoxuan Liu, known as Xiao, is an Associate Professor in AI and Digital Health at the University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Her work centres on the responsible innovation of AI health technologies, ensuring they are safe, effective, and equitable.
Dr. Liu co-led the development of internationally recognized reporting guidelines for AI clinical trials, including SPIRIT-AI and CONSORT-AI, which have been adopted by major medical journals and regulators. She also initiated the STANDING Together project, aiming to tackle bias in health datasets to ensure AI benefits all.
In addition to her academic roles, Dr. Liu serves as a Deputy Editor at NEJM AI and advises organizations such as the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on AI as a medical device. She was previously a Health Scientist at Apple and practiced as an ophthalmology doctor in the NHS.
Dr. Liu's research and policy contributions have been featured in prominent publications, including The Lancet Digital Health and Nature Medicine. She continues to lead efforts in establishing standards and frameworks to support the safe and equitable implementation of AI in healthcare.
